How to measure under-sink space before buying storage
Check pipes, door hinges, and usable cabinet clearance before choosing an under-sink organizer.
Measure the opening, not just the cabinet
Empty the cabinet and measure the clear opening between the door hinges. Then measure the inside width, depth, and height. Record the narrowest usable dimensions: a wide cabinet may still have a small door opening. Keep measurements in both inches and centimeters if you are comparing listings. Divide centimeters by 2.54 to convert to inches.
Map the plumbing
Note the location of the drain trap, supply lines, disposal, and any filter. Measure from the cabinet floor to the lowest obstruction. Sketch the usable area on each side of the pipes. Keep shutoff valves accessible and leave room to inspect for leaks; do not place a shelf against plumbing or wiring.
Check the organizer in use
Compare the listed assembled dimensions with your usable space. For a sliding organizer, check how far the tray extends and whether the door opens wide enough. A two-tier unit also needs enough clearance for your tallest bottle on each tier. If a listing omits shelf spacing or extension depth, ask before ordering.
Choose a layout you can maintain
A small removable bin can work better than a large rack in an awkward cabinet. Group similar supplies and keep frequently used items at the front. Store cleaning products in their original containers and follow their labels, including storage instructions and keeping them out of reach of children.
