How to measure for curtain panels
Compare window width, rod position, panel count, and finished length before ordering curtains.
Start with the rod
Measure the usable width of the installed rod or track, then decide where you want the panels to finish. Do not use window-glass width as your only measurement. Allow clearance around heaters, vents, handles, and frequently used doors.
Count panels before calculating width
Listings may sell one panel, a pair, or fabric only. Multiply the width per panel by the number included. For a gathered appearance, total curtain width is often around one and a half to two times rod width, but the heading style and fabric change the result. Follow the specific product guidance.
Measure from the correct hanging point
For grommet curtains, measure from the rod and allow for fabric above the grommet. For hooks or tracks, use the actual attachment point. Measure more than one spot if the floor is uneven and choose a length that suits how you clean the room.
Check lining and installation details
Light-filtering, room-darkening, and blackout descriptions are not interchangeable. Check whether lining, rings, hooks, and tiebacks are included. Confirm the care label, color variant, and mounting hardware before ordering.
