How to choose bed sheets: mattress size and pocket depth

Measure your mattress in inches, compare fitted-sheet pocket depth, and check what a bedding set includes.

Measure the mattress you actually use

Record mattress width, length, and depth in inches, including any topper. Common US mattress sizes are Twin 38 by 75 inches, Twin XL 38 by 80, Full 54 by 75, Queen 60 by 80, King 76 by 80, and California King 72 by 84. Manufacturers can vary, so your measurements should decide the fit.

Check fitted-sheet pocket depth

Pocket depth is separate from mattress size. A Queen label does not tell you whether the elastic will reach around a thick mattress and topper. Compare your total depth with the listed fit range. If no pocket depth is given, ask before ordering rather than relying on a deep-pocket label.

Read the piece count

A bedding set may contain a duvet cover and pillowcases without a fitted sheet, comforter, or inserts. Match each listed piece to what you need. Check pillowcase measurements separately and compare duvet-cover dimensions with your existing insert.

Choose a care routine you can keep

Read the fiber composition and washing instructions for the selected variant. Do not judge softness or durability by thread count alone. Consider whether the fabric can be washed and dried with your usual laundry routine, and check return conditions before opening or washing bedding.
